Monday Memory Makers: Christmas Cards

Do you get lots of Christmas cards each year from friends and family? Do you feel bad just throwing them in the trash each year? Here's a simple idea of how you can save some of those cards to help you remember friends from over the years.

Each year, when Christmas is over, I collect all the Christmas cards I received and pull out the cards that I received with pictures of my friends and family. I do not save all the letters and generic cards; only the ones with pictures of people I know on them. I then file the Christmas photo cards in a simple box with a divider marking the year separating each year. Someday, I'd like to find a prettier box but for now, it's just a simple filing box.

Before I file the pictures, I try to make sure the year and the names of the individuals are either printed on the photo or written on the back by me. It's so easy to forget the year and even a friend's name a few years down the road. When I design my family Christmas card, I intentionally try to make sure it is a family picture with all our names and the year printed on the card.

This Christmas card box is not something I pull out and look through all the time but it is fun to look back through past years and remember the friends we were close to or how much our friends and family members have changed and matured over the years. I usually also put baby announcements, school pictures and wedding announcements in the Christmas card box if they have personal photos on them.

Do you save Christmas cards? Do you have any tips to share about making/saving Christmas cards?

  2. I do save them. So far in piles with rubber bands around them. I have been thinking about some kind of scrapbook, although the box is a great idea.

  5. I actually got the idea from seeing Christmas cards scrapbooked. I wanted something that would be a little more simple and less time consuming but in which I could still look back and see the photos. My next step is definitely to make a prettier box for them so I can leave it out to look through during the holidays. Maybe that can be a future post. :)

  6. i haven't ever saved mine, but I do have a good idea. When I was nannying, the little girl I watched ALWAYS wanted to do something crafty with me and I never wanted to spend the money on scrapbooking stuff. Often times, I would bring my big box of cut up magazine pictures and old cards that people had sent me and they would all be in a giant plastic bag. she would love to reach in and pic out different pictures and make collages for her mom when she came home. I would just collect cards and cut out the pictures from them
ALSO, christmas cards are really great for the frames that are on them. just cut out the frame that is framing the picture and you can use them as picture frames either on the fridge, the wall, in scrapbooking. Sometimes it looks cool on a scrapbook page to use a picture with a frame that doesn't actually fit it...sort of like catty cornered around the picture.

  7. I always save the Christmas cards with photos on them every year. I cut off the extra sayings and then display them on the end of one of my kitchen cabinets. I love seeing all my friends and family's faces all year long. Then I keep them. I do need to get a pretty box to store them in. Good idea.

  8. I have a cork board in my kitchen, and each year I cut the pictures out of the cards and display all the pics on the board. Especially since we live so far from so many old friends and family members, I like being able to look at everyone's pictures in my kitchen throughout the year. Just an idea for you all :)
